Summary
Streetwear varies around the world. For your convenience, we have broken down the main types of streetwear and their main characteristics. Read on to learn more about streetwear types.
Today, streetwear is gaining popularity in the fashion world, evolving from being seen as a more casual, everyday style to appearing in high fashion. Streetwear is one of the most popular styles these days, but the term itself can be confusing. There are many different types of clothing in streetwear, and there are many sub-genres of street style.
Streetwear also varies around the world - the style in Tokyo is very different from what you'd find on the streets of London or New York. However, for your convenience, we have broken down the main types of streetwear along with their key features, pieces, and brands. These are Skate, Techwear, and High Fashion (also known as Hypebeast). However, streetwear comes in a wide variety of styles, so don't be afraid to look up designers or even cities to find tons of different inspirations!
Skate Style
As the name suggests, this look has become popular with skateboarding culture around the world. The style originated in California, the birthplace of skating culture. The earliest skateboarding arose when surfers wanted to do something when there were no waves to ride. As a result, skate style was originally heavily influenced by the casual, relaxed look of American surf style, which emphasized graphic tees, baseball caps, and shorts.
Although the style has evolved since then, these basic principles and the casual feel of the style have remained the same. The summer skate style is closest to the original, with key looks including graphic tees, baseball caps, wide-leg shorts, and more. In winter, the look remains casual but combines hoodies, baggy cargo pants, flannels, and beanies. The goal was to create a relaxed, statement look that captures the relaxed spirit of California summer no matter the weather.
Often, skate style incorporates humor or pop culture references through graphic tees or slogan baseball caps. The main thing is to be casual and have fun! This makes this style very personable and fun.
Techwear
Techwear is an ultra-modern style that has become popular in recent years, focusing on style and function. Basically, it takes very utilitarian pieces like military vests and cargo pants and gives them a sleek, modern edge by styling them in luxe fabrics and/or a modern color palette like black and grey. The functionality of these pieces is inspired by outdoor and sportswear. With an emphasis on high-quality materials, functionality, and a sleek, modern style, technical clothing can often be pricey - especially key pieces like hardshell jackets.
It's a minimalist design and utilitarian fabrics make it ideal for those looking for affordable tech-wear basics. In the end, the most important aspect of Techwear fit is a jacket that is functional and cool, like a hard shell. Since these can be expensive, I recommend wearing a light hoodie under a thrifty trench coat. This achieves a similar look without investing heavily in a well-made but expensive hardshell jacket.
High Fashion/Hypebeast
Haute couture, hype beast, hip-hop – call it what you will – it's probably the most popular and influential street style today. The style is heavily embodied and popularized by hip-hop luminaries such as A$AP Rocky, Future, Kanye West, Migos, and more. Many even mentioned their favorite high fashion streetwear brands and designers in the song.
This style is reflected in designer logos mixed with classic streetwear such as sweatpants, graphic tees, and sneakers. There's no shortage of streetwear runway inspiration these days, with brands like Gucci, Prada, and Balenciaga embracing streetwear trends and incorporating them into their runway looks.
Since this is arguably the most popular type of streetwear, just a quick Google search will send you swimming in inspiration! Unfortunately, because of their reputation as high fashion and elite style, even "cheaper" hype beast fashion labels like Palace or Supreme still charge upwards of $100 a piece - some in the thousands. To try and embody this look on a budget, I suggest that instead of showing off logos and branding, try to find popular label labels for ripped jeans, hoodies, bomber jackets, and other separates that replicate the look but don’t cost a fortune. Because of the style's popularity, some more affordable stores carry hype beast-inspired pieces, such as Urban Outfitters, H&M, and even thrift stores.
